Because it is difficult for me to both stand and sit in church for a long time, I have gone during the second half of the Liturgy. When I slowly entered the church I was amazed to see how many people were there. At the end of prayers for travellers, I sprinkle people with holy water and , almost every time, those who are not even intending to travel, raise their arms as a sign that they also want to be sprinkled. Our present sprinkling brush is fairly large and probably can accommodate close to half a cup of water. Everyone gets a good dousing but there are always a few who ask for more, so that those nearest to me get more than their share, yet all are full of smiles as they receive this special blessing. We had a visitor from Berlin who is doing a doctoral thesis on the Orthodox monasteries in North America, as well as some one from Malaysia.
