This has been a day of particular significance for us, showing the two important aspects of Orthodox Christian life. First, we baptized Evgeniy, a Turkish man who has been yearning for so long to become an Orthodox Christian and thus, a new life in Orthodoxy. Then, after Vespers, we served a full memorial, as today is memorial Saturday when we pray for the repose of those who have departed this life. After Evgeniy’s baptism we had a meal to celebrate the occasion, just as we did after the memorial service. I am astonished at the degree of dedication to the monastery that many of our people have. Some have worked all day to improve the monastery buildings, others prepared food, still others cleaned and vacuumed. In my old age I can take comfort in knowing that, after I die, there will be devoted people to carry on the best of traditions in Orthodoxy.
