SATURDAY 9 JUNE 2018

We expected to have a group of Ethiopians visit us today but great was our surprise when we saw them arriving in their cars in addition to two busloads of passengers who stopped at the top of the monastery road so that they could walk all the way through the field. There were people of all ages, many of them, both men and women, wearing lightweight white shawls. They had asked Vladika Lazar to speak to them which he did, after which they sang, accompanied by drums with some ululating. Naturally there was not enough room for everyone, while the many children were taken outside for supervised playing. Everyone ate outside except for us as we remained in the hall. The food was completely Ethiopian and lenten, as they also are observing the Peter and Paul fast which for them as for us, ends on 12 July. Many photos were taken and I expect that some will appear on the internet. Some of our ladies were astonished to see how the Ethiopian women cleaned at the end of the afternoon, Not a single crumb could be found anywhere, and they even put on gloves to wash the toilet basin and bowls. This was a shining example of what our people could be doing (Hint, hint). In other words, do not expect others to do all the cleaning and, instead, each one of us should make an effort to clean up after ourselves.
