THURSDAY 28 JUNE 2018

On this day we commemorate the memory of Martyr Tsar Lazar of Kosovo who gave up his life for the defence of Serbia and who is honoured to this day by all Serbs. It is also the nameday of Vladika Lazar, and I feel sad that he has not received a single telephone call, message or email to congratulate him on his nameday. I can recall how fifty or sixty years ago many Orthodox people celebrated their nameday by inviting friends for a meal and asking for special prayers in church, but those were people who were born before the Soviet Union existed and it was a common practice. After three generation of Communist rule, most Orthodox people have become detached from celebrating their nameday and use their birthday instead. It is now too late to revert to the pious and Orthodox custom of remembering namedays, and it is another example of how Orthodoxy is gradually being eroded by western thoughts and practices. Never the less, I congratulate those who have not forgotten the significance of having a patron saint and its importance for us. I would not be wrong in saying that probably more than half of all Orthodox Christians have no idea of who their patron saint is, or when the saint’s memory is celebrated. Those who have ears let them hear!
