An Iconographer's Sketchbook: Volume One
(The Postnikov Collection)

This useful book is a collection of mostly canonical icon sketches, as well as the descriptions of these sketches. One thing that should be appreciated by all readers is the notice given of inappropriateness of some subjects; this is valuable information not only for the practicing iconographer but also for the student of iconography and for the general reader who wishes to be informed of our Church history and sacred tradition.

The book is well arranged and extremely informative. It is obvious from reading the text and looking at the sketches that this was a tremendous amount of work; I hope those who view this book will appreciate the effort that went into producing it. We are thankful that there are people in our English-speaking Orthodox world who are concerned and caring enough to work toward the creation of such texts to aid those who are striving to understand traditional iconography and related subjects.

Once again, we should strongly recommend this book for any parish library or the library of an individual interested in traditional iconography. A short review such as this cannot adequately present such a work but we are sure that this work will be deeply appreciated and helpful to any who obtains it.

* A word about Oakwood Publications; they are doing an excellent job of painlessly educating people in traditional Orthodox iconography and related subject matter. We pray that God would give them "many years" of such service to the English-speaking Orthodox world and we hope that the Orthodox (and others interested) will appreciate the work being done, since it is in their behalf.
