SATURDAY 6 OCTOBER 2018

As with any event that takes place here at the monastery, we were concerned that all was ready for the marriage of Tomas and Suneet and, indeed, we got off to a good start. Then, about half an hour before the ceremony was to begin, we had a power failure which sent us into a panic mode. We can survive without power except that the toilets cannot be flushed and a large crowd was expected. I quickly phoned BC Hydro and was told that it would take at least half an hour just to get to the location of the failure. This meant that we would serve in darkness. It is interesting to note that the Canadian guests arrived on time, while the Punjabis were, on the whole, somewhat late. Still, Vladika Lazar asked that the bells be rung exactly at eleven o’clock to begin the service. At that very moment the lights came on and we gave a sigh of relief. In addition to Vlaika Lazar, Father John Bingham served, while his son in law Andrey and grandson Makary served as subdeacon and altar server. The service was spectacular and, I am certain, everyone present was thoroughly engrossed. A reception followed but, with about one hundred and fifty people present, there was not enough room in the hall, so many sat out on the lawn where a number of tables and chairs had been set up. During the rest of the day, many visitors came and by mid evening I was totally exhausted, but what a lovely exhaustion it was.
